Wolf, who makes great cooking appliances and kitchen tools, recently did a survey for its’ reclaim the kitchen program and found that about one in every five adults only use their oven on occasion or for holidays. They also found that about 60% of 18-34 year olds eat snack or junk food for dinner and that if it takes longer than 30 minutes to cook a meal, 25% of people will just order take out instead. Whether you are designing a kitchen from scratch or planning a remodel, your choice of cabinetry, space planning and appliances are obviously very important. You must love the space you are working in!!
Budgets….we all have them so you must set a realistic budget that fits YOUR lifestyle. However, hardly anyone that buys budget cabinets saves money long term or really loves them. So how do you make your kitchen cabinets fit into your budget when QUALITY cabinets typically take up 40 to 50 percent of your kitchen design?
First and foremost, ALWAYS be up front with your contractor about your budget range. Sure, we don’t want to give away too much information so you can get the best price, but if you give a potential contractor a range to work with, they can talk to you about different hardware, drawer slide, paint verses stain and door options.
Second, know what you want and make sure to communicate that to your contractor. If you love to cook and entertain then make sure your contractor knows that. If you want your kitchen to be the show piece of your home, don’t be afraid to say it. Your kitchen should reflect who you are and should have everything in easy to reach convenient places. If you don’t like where things are now, let your contractor know so they can give you some different ideas. Communication is key.
Lastly, because quality kitchen cabinets will last a long time, you won’t need to replace those for many years to come. If you want to make updates or changes to your kitchen down the road, switching out the hardware or doing something as simple as painting the walls will make a world of difference without spending much money. You will still have that kitchen you love because everything is in the perfect place for who you are and the needs you have.
